The concordance (fifth posting)

The summary of two article :concordance and its application in language learning
summary (article 1)
A concordance is an alphabetical list of the principal words used in a book or body of work, with their immediate contexts. the concordance usually used on bible, and Qur'an. this article tell about the difficult of using concordance in the pre-computer era. even now we have the concordance software, its still require manual work while using concordance because (they often include additional material, including commentary on, or definitions of, the indexed words, and topical cross-indexing that is not yet possible with computer-generated and computerized concordances.) -en.wikipedia.org/wiki/concordance_(publishing)

There are two type of concordance:

  • A bilingual concordance is a concordance based on aligned parallel text
  • A topical concordance is a list of subjects that a book (usually The Bible) covers, with the immediate context of the coverage of those subjects. Unlike a traditional concordance, the indexed word does not have to appear in the verse.

The history about concordance is:

Hugh of St Cher(1262) was the first man who complied concordance in (Vulgate Bible).Rabbi Mordecai Nathan(1448) was completed a concordance to the Hebrew Bible in ten year. Besides, in 1599, Henry Stephens used a concordance when he published first Greek New Testament . in 1602 ,Conrad Kircher also used a concordance for The the Septuagint.(Bible). The first concordance to the English bible was published in 1550 by Mr Marbeck. During this time, a concordance apllied important role in writing a Bible.

summary(article 2)

In this article, a concordance can described as:

A concordance is a to 'concord' passage or text which show the use of a word. concordance usually found at the back of textbook. its make us easier to find the word, some concordance cited the meaning of the word and the page where we can found the word.

Besides, this article tell me about how concordance used in literature and linguistik student. it is to help them to find the particular word, phrase or theme.you can read more in http://www.dundee.ac.uk/english/concordance.htm

concordance application in language learning:

1. Concordance can help student to look up for funtion word and helping them to discover grammartical error.

2. A concordancer will reveal a variety of meanings and patterns attached to the function word.

3. Searching for pairs of near synonyms in order to give learners some of the evidence needed for distinguishing their use.

4. Concordancers can be applied to error analysis or interlanguage studies

5. Might be beyond the proficiency level of the learners

You can find the article about concordance application: http://www.sfu.ca/~heift/Ling480/coursematerial/week4.pdf

My personal view about concordance:

I think concordance is a important thing to help us as a language and literature student to learn more in english language. As I mention in the two article that I have read before, concordance is a useful to my course. Ihope after this, my friend and I, can learn how to used concordance and used it in learning english language or other language.

The benefit of concordance to language learner and language teacher:

For language learner

A concordance can help them to :
• checking general syntax and the meaning of word
• checking usage
• checking derived forms
• checking collocates of words

for teacher:

1. As a source of input for teaching:
Teachers can generate authentic instances of usage to present to students when teaching a particular language point

If the concordancer is kept in the classroom, then the teacher can run a concordance when a problem of usage arises during teaching

2.As input for material development
In preparing concordance-based teaching materials in advance allows the teacher to edit the samples chosen.
